Surface active agents – or surfactants – are at the core of cleaning products, including soaps, detergents, shampoos, and even toothpaste. Everyone knows that water and oil don’t mix, which is why water alone is insufficient for washing off oil and grease. Surfactants stand in that gap; they contain components that are water-soluble and others that are water-insoluble, so they can grab those oils and dirt off your clothes and rinse them away in the water.
