Titanium dioxide is a natural chemical compound that creates the whitest of whites – in paints, coatings, and varnishes, in papers and plastics, and in cosmetics and foods. In fact, titanium dioxide alone accounts for 70% of all production volume of pigments worldwide, making it one of the top 50 compounds in the chemical industry. It is used as a tattoo pigment, whitens skim milk to make it more palatable, and is used in the lines marking tennis courts.
In addition to its use as a coloring agent, titanium dioxide is a strong sunscreen. Its high refractive index, strong UV light absorption, and stability in combination with gentleness on the skin make it a go-to chemical of choice in commercial sun blocks. In its powder form, it is also used as an opacifier in a variety of products. Properly formatted, it can even be put to work as a pearlescent agent; its interference patterns can give you paint that appears to change colors based on the angle of illumination
