The difference between thermoplastics and thermoset plastics is relationally somewhat like the difference between water and pasta. Water can be frozen into ice, melted back into water, frozen back into ice, and on and on without losing the structural integrity of the water. This is like thermoplastics, which can be melted and reformed repeatedly without degrading. (Thermoset plastics, however, are more like pasta. Just as pasta can be softened by cooking, but cannot be fully recooked, thermoset plastics cannot be remelted – exposing them to extreme heat after they have been set will only result in burning.)
The ability to be reheated and remolded sets the stage for a variety of useful applications, including Plexiglas, musical strings, grocery bags, data storage devices, and electric cable insulation. Although it is generally more expensive than thermoset plastic and you have to be careful not to get it too hot, lest it melt, these products carry a number of distinct advantages. Perhaps the most apparent is the ease with which they can be reused and recycled. Among their other advantages are more varied aesthetic options, high strength and impact resistance, and bendability.
