Conversion coatings are much more complicated than simply applying a layer of paint to a metal surface. Regardless of the form it takes – anodizing, bluing, chromate, phosporate, black oxide – this pretreatment actually mechanically bonds cured paint to the metal. In addition to adding color, conversion coatings increase surface hardness and, most importantly, provide significant corrosion protection.
